Requirements to vote:

  • 18 years old on or by Election Day.

  • US citizen.

  • Be a resident of Tennessee and the county listed on your registration.

  • If you have been convicted of a felony, your eligibility to register and vote depends upon the crime you were convicted of and the date of your conviction. If your conviction made you ineligible, you may regain your eligibility if your conviction has been expunged or if you have had your voting rights restored, unless you were convicted of a crime that rendered you permanently ineligible to vote. How do I register?

  • In the state of Tennessee, you can register to vote online, via mail, or in person.

  • To register online, go to https://ovr.govote.tn.gov/. In order to register online, you must have a drivers’ license or a Tennessee ID. If you do not have either, you must register via mail.

    • The deadline to register online is 30 days before Election Day.

  • To register via mail, you can print off a form online or pick one up at certain locations. Then, you must mail it or hand-deliver it to your county election commission office. You can find the form at: https://sos-tn-gov-files.s3.amazonaws.com/forms/ss-3010.pdf. You can find your county election commission office’s address at: http://tnsos.org/elections/election_commissions.php. You can also find the form at one  of the following locations:

    • County Election Commission Offices

    • County Clerk’s Offices

    • Public Libraries

    • Register of Deeds Offices

    • Your form must be postmarked 30 days before Election Day.

  • To register in person, you may do so during a transaction with one of these agencies:

    • Department of Health (WIC program)

    • Department of Human Services

    • Department of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

    • Department of Mental Health

    • Department of Safety (motor vehicles division)

    • Department of Veteran’s Affairs

    • The deadline to register in person is 30 days before Election Day.

  • You do not have to register with a party to vote in either a primary or a general election. In order to declare your allegiance to a party, you do have to affiliate with them at the primary polling location, but you do not have to do so to vote on their primary ballot.

  • If you legally change your name or move to a new address, you must update your registration online or by submitting a new voter registration form. However, if you move to a new county, you must submit a new registration to your new county election commission office.

    • The deadline to update your voter registration is 5 days before Election Day. if you are updating via mail, your form must be postmarked by the deadline.
